Foxes!

We have had the good fortune to be able to observe a family of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) at Stratford Point over the last year.   Red foxes are not uncommon in Connecticut, but they are secretive and often nocturnal in their habits.   Having a den right outside the office has given us a rare opportunity to see and photograph them.   They often come and go on rainy or cloudy days and sometimes we get to see them on sunny days as well, especially when they’re hard at work trying to raise a litter of kits, as they did this spring.

The above shot is of “Vicki”, the female of the pair (vixen) who was resting near a trail on an unusually warm fall day. Scott Kruitbosch from the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History (RTPI) just happened to have his big telephoto lens with him and was able to get a few great photos.
